About the Project

The North Carolina African American Heritage Commission (NC AAHC) in partnership with the WeGOJA Foundation is spearheading an innovative project to identify and develop infrastructure for mapping and marking extant Green Book sites. The aim of this project is to create easily accessible information that will enable the exploration and research of existing Green Book sites. The project will also serve as a blueprint for a Green Book extant sites historical marker program.

To ensure the success of this important initiative, the NC AAHC launched a series of virtual and in-person working group sessions in South Carolina and North Carolina. These sessions brought together historians, business owners, and other community stakeholders to gather insights and inform design. Throughout the summer, participants worked together to help preserve community histories and continue the legacy of Black community safeguarding.

As a result of their commitment and hard work, the project has made significant progress, including the proliferation of local information and archival access and research. By working together, these dedicated individuals have echoed the efforts of hotels and service providers that supported Black travelers during the 20th century. The Green Book project of the Carolinas is dedicated to preserving Black community histories. Its success would not be possible without the support and dedication of its participants
